DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY: GARY PHILLIPS

21 January, 1999

I was born in Brisbane, February 1954 and went to the Enoggera State Primary School, then Kelvin Grove State High School. I graduated to the University of Queensland and received a Bachelor's degree in Surveying in 1974.

I moved out of home and into a share house in Rosecliffe Street, Highgate Hill. With 16 years education behind me, I immediately started mowing lawns to make a living.

I eventually found a job as a surveyor with the Brisbane City Council making engineering maps for the Council's flood mitigation scheme. After a year I resigned and got a job in a 16ml film lab as a chemical mixer and film courier. I met many interesting people in the 18 months I was there. After I left the film lab, I bought a boat and lived on it and was a part time cleaner at night and did a communication course at Griffin University. After a year, Ron Bollman who ran the university video studio and also shot commercials, left to start his own production company. Walking past his office one day, he called me in and offered me a job as a "go for". He then trained me as a camera assistant and after 2 years went freelance as a clapper loader/camera assistant.

I then got work as a loader on some feature films? "The Settlement", "Coolangatta Gold". On these films I met some Sydney camera department crew, who then asked me down to work on some other projects, such as "Burke and Wills" etc. After completing "Burke and Wills" I started freelance full time focus pulling with such cameraman as Russell Boyd, Dean Semler, Jeff Darling and David Gribble.

Around 1990 I started to operate and shoot short films. I then decided to become a freelance DOP and cast my fate to the wind.

In the 8 years I have been a DOP I have shoot television commercials all over the world, won awards for various commercials. It was strange coming back to Brisbane and finding that Rosecliffe Street, my very first home away from home, was the location for my first serious drama film, Feeling Sexy.
